2012 MMA Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of MMA Members was held Sunday, January 22, 2012, beginning with the General Session at 9:00 am for members and invited guests. A closed (members-only) Technical Session followed at 10:00 am.

MMA Status Report

MMA President Tom White explained how MMA's mission is providing for interoperability of MIDI products, and explained the various technical proposals and business development projects being managed by MMA on behalf of the industry.

  • HD Protocol - (See here for the current status.)
  • IEC MIDI Specification - A proposal is under consideration to submit some portion of the MIDI Specification to IEC for standardization, to improve recognition as a standard by emerging countries.
  • MMA AVBTP Payload Types - The new IEEE AVB Transport Protocol specification (IEEE-1722) includes a reference to MMA for specifications now under development that define the transport of MIDI and HD Protocol.
  • Updated MIDI Electrical spec - A proposal for MMA to publish a new circuit diagram using current components and practices and allowing for 3.3V power supplies.
  • Logo and Trademark Protection - MMA is working with AMEI in Japan and CMIA in China to prevent dilution of the  meaning of "MIDI" in China caused by registered marks being used on non-MIDI products.
  • Web Audio & MIDI Standards - The web standards organization (W3C) is developing technology to enable browser-based audio apps, and is considering an MMA request to support MIDI input/output. W3C's Doug Schepers presented an overview of W3C and their Web Audio project.

Mr. White added that MMA is also looking into new specifications such as MIDI over Bluetooth and MIDI for eBooks, and reported on MMA promotional efforts for MIDI at 2012 CES and the 2012 NAMM HOT Zone, as well as the upcoming 30th Anniversary of MIDI in January 2013.

Ethan Wetzel (Bosch) presented information about the Open Control Architecture Alliance, which is a new pro-audio industry effort to define a communications standard for control and monitoring of devices in professional media networks.

Following the General Session the MMA members discussed each active technical proposal in more detail, and there was a presentation and demo about developing Windows/OSX/embedded products that use RTP-MIDI, AVB, MIDI, and MMA HD (draft) protocols.
