Current MMA Working Groups (October 2006)

Proposals for High-Definition MIDI protocol (HD-MIDI) are now being discussed. HD-MIDI would provide greater resolution in data values, increase the number of MIDI Channels, and support the creation of entirely new kinds of MIDI messages.
The TLWG makes recommendations and produces specifications for alternate transports for MIDI protocol (other than the transport defined in the current MIDI 1.0 Detailed Specification). TLWG objectives are to insure continued high-quality performance, maximum interoperability, and consumer satisfaction with MIDI. The group recently completed review and comments on the IETF's RTP-MIDI Specification, and continues to monitor and discuss FireWire, Ethernet, USB and other transports for MIDI.
Because "DLS" is a fairly mature standard, this working group serves primarily to manage maintenance issues. The most recent version of DLS is DLS 2.2 which contains corrections and clarifications intended to align DLS with the recent Mobile DLS/XMF Specification (for mobile phones and portable devices).

The MMA's Scalable MIDI Working Group (now Mobile Working Group) created the SP-MIDI Specification and the 5-to-24 Note Profile for 3GPP which has been adopted for 3rd generation mobile phones, and completed a specification for custom wavetables for mobile phones (Mobile DLS/XMF) in conjunction with the MMA's DLSWG. Current projects include authoring guidelines for content developers, and proposed standards for adding audio clips and associated metadata to Mobile DLS/XMF files..

The MMA's Extensible Music File (XMF) format encapsulates Standard MIDI Files with DLS and other content for synchronized playback and file interchange. XMFWG is discussing ideas for a MIDI+Audio file type for professional applications, and is assisting the IASIG in developing a cross-platform solution for bundling of audio assets with cues, branches and other interactivity instructions.

This group was formed to investigate the feasibility of a standard interface between audio/MIDI hosts and plug-ins. Because of the large number of plug-in vendors (not host vendors) the initial discussions to determine requirements were hosted outside of the MMA. The results of those discussions are available at www.gmpi-plugins.org. At this time there is no activity on GMPI in MMA.

This group is working on the clarifications and enhancements to documentation for the MMA's XML Specifications of MIDI events, Program/Controller Names, and Device features.
