MIDI Sessions at The NAMM Show - January 14-17, 2010

"It's All MIDI..."

This year NAMM invited partner organizations (like MMA) to rethink, rebuild and plan for the future of the music products industry by participating in the new H.O.T. (Hands-On Training) Zone on Level 2 of the Anaheim Convention Center. More than 15 industry partners, publishers, organizations and associations offered training, face-to-face meetings, networking opportunities, and one-on-one mentoring to strengthen the knowledge base of industry colleagues.

The MMA produced the following sessions showing how technology is changing how people make music.

Session Title Description
Rock Band Network:
Get Your Music in the Game!
MTV's Harmonix Music Systems uses MIDI to create Rock Band® tracks, and you can, too! Harmonix demonstrated how to put songs into Rock Band and sell them to other Rock Band players. (See the article on our web site)

One lucky attendee also won a prize package from Harmonix and Microsoft, including an XBOX 360, Rock Band 2 system, and all the software and tools to create their own Rock Band tracks.

21st Century Musical Instruments:
Alternative Controllers
Think MIDI is just for keyboards? This session featured David Battino (Batmosphere), Julian Colbeck (KeyFax), and Florian Bomers (Bome) describing a variety of non-keyboard MIDI instruments -- from traditional (winds, drums, etc,) to unusual (DJ controllers, laser controllers, graphics tablets, DIY, etc.)-- that make creating and playing music easier than ever before.

21st Century Musical Instruments: iPhone®/iPod® MIDI goes Mobile! This session featured Marcus Ryle (Line6), Kaz Hikawa (Crimson), and Alex Souppa (Akai Pro) describing MIDI hardware and software for the iPhone/iPod.

Technology in Music Education Presenter John Kuzmich Jr. explained how educators use MIDI to recruit students and teach musical concepts, and where to get additional information about products, techniques, and peer resources for educators. (Session Handout
