| New Opportunities for Electronic Percussion |
Mario DeCiutiis of Alternate Mode (makers of the DrumKat
and MalletKat) showed how electronic percussion offers significant benefits
over traditional acoustic products, using software to map sound
combinations as well as loops and rhythm patterns to different strike
techniques on a variety of MIDI percussion controllers. Corey
Fournier of Roland demonstrated a number of new products, including hand
percussion and music training software for drummers. |

| Transforming iPhones & iPads into Musical Instruments |
Jordan Rudess
(Dream Theater), Avery Burdette (Yamaha), and Marcus Ryle (Line 6)
each provided a perspective on how the iOS platform is changing the
production and creation of music. Marcus described how MIDI is currently
integrated into current iOS devices, and showed some examples of software
that can record MIDI data and control external MIDI devices. Avery showed
some applications for live sound control (remote control of mixers and
effects processors), and Jordan demonstrated how the touch screen
encourages creation of music. [photo] |

| How Music Games Create New Music Makers |
Corey Fournier and a supporting cast from Roland and Fender
explained the new features of Rock Band 3 that encourage gamers to play
real musical instruments. The companies demonstrated products (a guitar,
electronic keyboard and drum kit) that connect to gaming consoles via a
MIDI adapter and can be used in "Pro-Mode" to play the original
tracks instead of simplified parts. There are also music lessons built
into the game for use with the MIDI instruments. [outline] |
