Elevator Pitch

GigWiz

GigWiz transforms your iPhone into a powerful MIDI workstation, expanding the versatility of your MIDI keyboard. Create layered/split sounds with ease, make quick adjustments, and enhance your mobile setup for live performance

Product Description

GigWiz

GigWiz is a powerful MIDI hardware controller designed to make live performance and music production easier and more intuitive. It solves a common problem for keyboardists who use mobile music setups - that app's complex interface can be difficult to navigate while playing on stage. GigWiz streamlines the process by providing a traditional keyboard layout along with physical controls that allow players to quickly adjust their sound on the fly. GigWiz can be used as a standard MIDI controller, but its true power comes from its efficient integration with the popular AUM app. AUM works like a VST host on iOS devices and can be difficult to navigate on stage. GigWiz's intuitive design enhances the user experience by eliminating the need to navigate the app's interface and making layered or split sounds and personalized adjustments from the convenience of physical hardware, just like a dedicated keyboard/workstation. With the addition of GigWiz and any MIDI-equipped keyboard, even a 10-year old iPhone can be turned into a standalone, stage-ready keyboard, making this setup an affordable alternative to mid-level dedicated keyboard workstations, with the added benefit of being easily expandable with new apps, sounds, and plugins. The custom template for AUM features two modules - Module A for real instruments such as piano, Rhodes, and organ, and Module B for synth sounds. With the dedicated controllers of GigWiz, users can; -turn on/off modules A and B, -layer modules(A+B) or split the keyboard (A/B or B/A), -quickly jump between presets for each module, -change octaves or transpose, -send sustain pedal messages, -send custom CC messages in ‘momentary’ or ‘toggle’ mode -add reverb or delay separately to each module or the master output using the rotary encoder, -change module volumes or the master volume with 3 Potentiometers, -send pitch-bend and custom CC messages using the Joystick and Fader Visual feedback is also an essential feature for keyboardists who perform live or work in production settings. Being able to see which preset is currently selected, the position of octave buttons, and the level of the effects is crucial to any performance. GigWiz's design includes a 128x64 OLED screen and 35 RGB LEDs for visual feedback. The OLED screen displays the current preset configuration and option menus, while the LEDs indicate various button functions. The LEDs also have another function - because of the semi transparent 3D printed plastic cover, they paint the entire device with two opposite color palettes ('cold' and 'warm', based on the selection of Modules A and B) to show players which module is currently selected.

How It's Innovative

GigWiz is highly innovative for several reasons. First, it solves a real problem for keyboardists and producers who use mobile setups. With the proliferation of mobile devices, more and more musicians are turning to apps for their music production and performance needs. However, many of these apps have complex interfaces that can make it difficult to make adjustments on the fly - especially on stage. GigWiz provides a traditional and intuitive keyboard layout, along with physical controllers that allow players to make lightning-fast adjustments to their sound without having to navigate the app's interface. Another great thing about GigWiz is you can bring new life to that old iPhone that's been sitting in your drawer or collecting dust in your closet. Instead of throwing it away or giving it to recycling, simply connect the phone to GigWiz and you can instantly expand the versatility of your MIDI keyboard. There's no need to invest thousands of dollars into the latest technology when you can get amazing performance from GigWiz with your current devices. Finally, GigWiz is highly expandable and customizable. While it was designed primarily for use with the AUM app, it can be easily adapted for use with other apps and software. Additionally, GigWiz allows players to create custom presets and mappings, which means they can set it up exactly how they like it and use it to best fit their musical needs. In summary, GigWiz is an innovative device that solves real problems for performing keyboardists and producers. Its intuitive design, integration with the AUM app, high degree of visual feedback, and expandability make it a must-have for anyone who wants to perform and produce music using mobile devices.

Most Inspiring Use Cases

The most inspiring use of GigWiz is its ability to create complex and dynamic sounds on the fly. One particularly inspiring use of GigWiz could be in jam sessions where keyboardists are required to improvise and adapt to the playing of others on the fly. For example, during a jam session, a keyboardist using GigWiz can quickly set up a Rhodes/Synth lead split, then create a Piano+Pad layer or a Synth Bass//Rhodes split with delay on the Rhodes and reverb on the Synth. With GigWiz, keyboardists can easily adjust multiple parameters for each sound with the help of fader, joystick and knobs and create a unique blend of sounds that will enhance their performance without having to make adjustments in the app itself. GigWiz was designed to solve a common problem for keyboardists - that app's complex interface can be difficult to navigate while playing. By providing traditional physical controllers that can be adjusted easily on the fly, GigWiz enables keyboardists to experiment more with their sound and create new and exciting arrangements, both in live performance and during recording studio sessions.

Expansion Plans

I plan to manufacture GigWiz with a professional PCB. The current prototype is hand-made and therefore, includes cables inside, making the device thicker. With the new PCB, the thickness of the device will be reduced by 50%, leaving room for other accessories. My plan is to include a bottom layer with a USB hub, 3.5mm audio input and output, and a slidable part where users can put their phone like a cartridge. These additions will enable users to have everything they need in one compact, portable device that can be connected to any MIDI-equipped keyboard using a single cable. In order to improve the functionality of GigWiz, I plan to add Bluetooth MIDI connectivity to the next prototype. This will allow users to connect wirelessly, eliminating the need for cables. Another planned feature is Wi-Fi support, which will enhance the configuration options of GigWiz via a computer or mobile device. Additionally, GigWiz's next version will enable users to play pre-assigned chords via buttons, providing even greater customization options for performing and producing music. One of my goals is to provide more customized templates for other popular apps, enabling users to take full advantage of GigWiz's physical controllers and visual feedback with other apps like MainStage. I look forward to receiving feedback from the music community on these expanded features, further refining my plans and ensuring that GigWiz can serve musicians and producers to the best of its capabilities.

Commercialization

Drawing on my experience as both a professional keyboardist and software/electronics hobbyist, I created GigWiz as a solution to the challenges I faced in using mobile music setups. My commercialization plans will be determined by public interest in the product. Based on the level of interest and demand, I will determine the best approach to manufacturing, financing, and distributing the product on a larger scale. Currently, due to the unavailability of payment channels like PayPal and crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter in Turkey, I am exploring alternative ways to finance and distribute the GigWiz. However, I am keeping an open door for future developments, such as a potential move to a location where these payment channels are available. Ultimately, my goal is to make GigWiz accessible to anyone who wants a cost-effective and intuitive solution for their mobile music setup, and I am committed to finding creative solutions to achieve that goal. I will continue to work on refining the design and exploring ways to streamline production so that I can eventually offer the product to a wider audience.
