Hi,
I connected my Alesis Surge Mash drum kit to my Dell laptop with a USB cable.
The machine configuration is an Intel Core i7 with 32GB RAM and runs Windows 10 Pro ver 21H2.
The kit is MIDI plug-and-play (no need for driver installation).

Windows recognized the drums as Alesis surge with no errors.
I ran a DAW software (Cakewalk) with VST and did not get a response from my drums.
I tested the MIDI connection with a MIDI controller test tool like
https://www.onlinemusictools.com/webmiditest/.
I noticed that the messages from the drums (248 repeatedly and other messages for each use of the pads) were received when connecting the USB cable for about 5 seconds and then stopped. The Alesis surge appears correctly in the device managers.
I connected to another USB port; same problem.
I tried to disable the option that turns off USB devices to save power, but it didn't help.
I connected to another PC with Windows 11; it worked fine!
So I assume it has something to do with my laptop or Windows 10.
Any ideas?

This indeed sounds like an overzealous power-saving "feature".

What is the exact name of the setting that you tried to disable? "USB selective suspend"?

The exact setting is "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", but it is not likely that it turns off the USB root device after only 5-10 seconds.
Anyway, I disabled this option and it didn't help.

I disabled the USB selective suspend. Same problem.
I read somewhere that it could be a problem with the cable. I will try to buy a new cable and check it out.
An update will come.

Hardware errors would happen randomly, not always after 5 seconds.

But I know of no other setting that might help.
