Has any firm or person developed software to extend the velocity range of MIDI to bring it closer to the dynamic range of a real piano or other instrument? I suspect it could be done by mapping louder and softer values to the basic velocity value, although the ideal would be to have a wider velocity range.
I use guitar controllers and wonder if any keyboard synths offer velocity settings that do this. If so, can anyone recommend a hardware module with such settings.

You mean, something like the High Resolution Velocity Prefix?
