According to the "General MIDI Percussion Map", channel 10 is used for percussion, and MIDI note numbers from 35 to 81 are assigned to particular percussion instruments. What about note numbers outside of that range? Are they ever used by hardware manufacturers or software developers? And for what purpose? Is there any consensus, if not an official standard?

Yes, GM2 extends the range downward slightly and up to note 88, I believe,
Other manufacturers I know of extend down to note 13 and up to 91.
I think I've even seen one go as far as note 108.
But these are special kits that are selected use the bank select mechanism.
