Hey, my first post here! I've been using MIDI since the mid-80s but this one has me stumped LOL I'm attempting to revive my old one-man-band gear (via midi) and I am having success for the most part. I have had to replace some inner-hardware here and there. So now all the devices are working; SC Drumtraks, Systems 360 MIDI Bass, SC Split-8 synth connected to a Yamaha YME8 midi expander ... the devices are slaves via midi from the MSQ700 sequencer loaded by JL Cooper disk drive. So, I have everything working; load a song into the sequencer and press play. The devices receive their respective MIDI commands on their respective channels and all is well; all 3 devices play their midi parts in sync.

Now I want to get this data into my DAW, Reaper, via M-Audio Uno MIDI to USB. If successful, I can then use virtual plug-ins instead of lugging around gear and really stream-line my set up.

Here's where it gets dicey and I need help ... when I press play on the sequencer, with the UNO MIDI to USB using a MIDI Thru on the expander, all the devices play but only the MIDI Bass and Split-8 transmit data to Reaper and into a separate midi track per channel, as should be. But the Drumtraks is not sending any midi data. Now the interesting part ... while the sequencer is playing or stopped, if I tap on an instrument pad on the Drumtraks, that midi signal is sent. Also, if I press Play on the Drumtraks it will send midi data BUT NOT when told to play by the sequencer. Not solving this problem would mean that a successful capture of all the MIDI parts of my many songs would mean recording the bass and keys, then recording the drums, then trying to sync that up (nearly impossible because the first notes have to be so precisely lined up and Reaper makes me press record first , then play on the sequencer, meaning those two separate recording wont start at exactly the same time :(

I've tried different cables. I also bought a MIDI 2 in 1 out cable so the the MIDI out from the Drumtraks and the midi out from the sequencer could both go into the same MIDI on on the expander, but no dice!

Would a MIDI merge, which I've never used, is the Drumtraks sending getting some kind of OFF msg, is it Reaper 20230316_184012_resized.jpg or what the heck is going on here LOL

Thanks,

Karma

My suspicion, on the basis of the data we've got, is that this is something to do with channels.

When you cause the Druntraks to play manually, it is maybe sending data on a channel that is being received somewhere. When you're sending data via playing something pre-prepared (a midi file ?) the data is being sent on a different channel (as per the midi file ?), and this channel is NOT being received by Reaper (?).

You need to check which channels devices are using, which channels devices are set to receive on. For more complex systems, you can set specific devices to receive certain channels only so you can stop a device from playing notes that it should NOT be playing.

Receive channels may not be the same as send channels.

Thanks Geoff. All the channels are set properly. I have it recording now from being triggered by the MSQ; however, sometimes Reaper will quit receiving MIDI data from the Drumtraks yet the Drumtraks is still playing. When I check the recorded Reaper MIDI track, I see an All Notes Off message in the track at the same time it stops recording, even though there is not an All Notes Off event in the song or MIDI file. It seems to happen when one of the other Channels begins recording on a separate track.

All my songs/MIDI info is on 4 channels; 1,2,3,4. The MSQ stores then plays Channels 1,2,3 on playback (two synths and the bass device). I have my 4 different receiving devices set to different Inputs on the Reaper recording tracks. But when Reaper sees the synth, for example, kick in, it stops recording the Drumtraks even though the Drumtraks keeps playing. When I ispect the two different recorded tracks, I see the Drumtraks recording stops at about the same time the synth starts playing.

Oh man, you can tell this is very confusing, even though I have decades of experience with MIDI *but not much experience with DAWs)

Thanks for you help; I really appreciate it.

All Notes Off should JUST turn OFF all notes that are playing at that moment. That's all. Should not have any effect on any later notes. Although sounds like the notes are being played, but not received?

So two things.

Is any other message sent at the same time as the All Notes Off? Maybe some sort of general reset?

Can you stop that message being sent? If you know which device is sending it - the Synth? - maybe it can be stopped. You've not said anything to suggest that this is actually needed.

If you've got midi received/stored for when this happens, it would be interesting to see the midi file/data.
