My Pro Tools software came with XPand! 2, which has a ton of samples, but I don't have (or can afford) a MIDI controller to access them. I want to use my computer keyboard as the controller. Someone recommended I used LoobBe and Bomes, but Bomes is PC only and I'm on a Mac. I found one program called MidiStroke. It seems like what I need, but I can't figure out how to use it; I'm super inexperienced with MIDI. If MidiStroke is something I need, how do I set it up? Do I have to use another program in conjunction with it? I want to use this in a Pro Tools session. Like how there's the "Musical Typing" option in Garageband that lets you start a VI track and use the keyboard to control it (all while in the DAW).

Thanks,
-Adam

Hi,

Please try VMPK (Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard) http://vmpk.sourceforge.net/
I'm the author of this software that works in Windows, Linux and Mac OSX, but never tried to use it with Pro Tools. Good luck!

Pedro

I actually downloaded vmpk a while back, but can't figure out how to set it up (to work with the sample programs in Pro Tools.. specifically BOOM and XPand! 2). Do I need an intermediary app to link vmpk to the sample programs, as a MIDI controller?
Just yesterday I downloaded midi_patchbay, Jack and midiStroke. I couldn't figure out how to use them or what they're for; I'm assuming one (or all) is the intermediary app.
I've never used MIDI before so the terminology is foreign to me, as well as the procedure to set it up. I'd just buy a MIDI controller, i.e. keyboard, pads, etc., but I don't have the cash.

Thanks for vmpk as well as your help now.
