What is MIDI?


MIDI is an industry standard music technology protocol that connects products from many different companies including digital musical instruments, computers, tablets, and smartphones. MIDI is used every day around the world by musicians, DJs, producers, educators, artists, and hobbyists to create, perform, learn, and share music and artistic works.

The Official MIDI Specifications

The MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) produces the Specifications that make MIDI products work together. The Specifications define new MIDI Messages and new Recommended Practices for using MIDI Technology. Join the MIDI Association and use the links below to find and download all of the available MIDI Specifications and Recommended Practices. 

The newly adopted MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) specification is now available for download at the bottom of the MIDI 1.0 specification page in the Supplemental Specifications section.
